Maria de Jesus Medical Mission was founded from a simple belief: every child deserves access to specialized rehabilitation care, regardless of where they are born or their family's financial circumstances.
In 2013, Dr. Darlene Makulski began volunteering in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, providing rehabilitation care for children living with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions. What began as a volunteer medical mission quickly revealed a much greater need. Many families had little or no access to rehabilitation specialists, medications, medical equipment, or ongoing care. Through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and local organizations, she worked to obtain medications and resources that otherwise would have been unavailable to these children.
As the need continued to grow, Maria de Jesus Medical Mission was established in 2023 to ensure that this work could continue and expand. Today, the organization conducts multiple medical missions each year, providing comprehensive rehabilitation evaluations, medications, specialized equipment, therapy support, education, and hope to children and their families throughout underserved communities in Mexico.
The organization is named in honor of Dr. Makulski's late grandmother, Maria De Jesus Lugo, whose life embodied compassion, resilience, and selfless service. Despite having very little herself, she quietly cared for children in her neighborhood who did not have enough to eat. Together with her husband, she worked tirelessly to raise nine children, ensuring they had food on the table, clothes on their backs, and, above all, an education. They believed education was the pathway to opportunity and a better future—a belief that has been passed from one generation to the next.
Maria De Jesus Medical Mission carries forward that same spirit of generosity. Every child served, every family supported, and every medical mission completed honors the legacy of a woman whose kindness continues to inspire this work. Her example reminds us that true compassion is measured not by what we have, but by what we are willing to give to others.
